My first name is Lauren, but most call me Loi (Low-E). I currently lead research at TripAdvisor. Prior to joining TripAdvisor, I was a user experience researcher and then research manager at Facebook. I finished a PhD at The Annenberg School for Communication at The University of Pennsylvania in 2012.
I am a mixed methods social media researcher. In my role at Facebook, I used a variety of research methods to understand Facebook use and inform product design and product marketing. At Penn, I focused on how social media use affects social network characteristics (e.g. size, composition, and access to social capital). I’ve published various articles on these topics. Advised by Dr. Keith N. Hampton, my dissertation examined the relationship between social network sites, social capital, and geography.
Before starting my PhD I worked in tech research at Forrester Research. I received my B.A. in Sociology from Tufts University at which time I spent many hours on the river as a part of the women’s crew team.
Once again a New Englander, I moved back to the Boston area to join TripAdvisor after living in San Jose, Philly, upstate NY, and London.
